First published in 1943, The Little Prince is the most famous work by the aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is a poetic tale, with watercolor illustrations by the author, in which a pilot lost in the desert meets a young prince visiting Earth from a tiny asteroid. The story is philosophical and includes social critiques of the adult world. It was written during a period when Saint-Exupéry fled to the United States after the fall of France during World War II, an event witnessed by the author and recorded in his memoir Flight to Arras. Few stories capture the hearts of readers of all ages as well as The Little Prince.
